Oyinbo Man’s Pedagogy

Substantive evidence from the qualitative data set indicates that elite Nigerian parents also made a judgement about the quality of a school based on the type of pedagogical (the principles and methods of educating) approach it adopts. Data from the parents’ interview transcripts shows several references to the Nigeria ‘style of teaching’ and the ‘Oyinbo man ’s way’ (Oyinbo man or woman is a colloquial phrase used to describe white persons). More significantly, the parents overwhelmingly considered the Oyinbo man ’s pedagogy to be infinitely different from, and superior to the Nigerian pedagogy . In the main, parents described the Nigerian pedagogy as consisting of learning by rote with a specific focus on the ‘cramming’ and regurgitation of facts while the Oyinbo man ’s pedagogy was conceived as an investigatory learning approach whereby children are taught to seek out knowledge for themselves.British curriculum tends to bring up the kids as to know how to do things professionally for themselves. Even academically, the kind of assignments that they are given is to make the kids to use their initiatives, OK? Sometimes they give them assignments that the teacher has not even given them any inclination on how the solutions are formed. (Mr. Akpan)
